About World Book Day
World Book Day is celebrated on the 2nd March 2023 with the theme this year of making it YOUR World Book Day. Organised by the United Nation’s Education and Science sector, it first started in the UK in 1997. It helps teachers, T.A.s, supply teachers and parents develop a love of reading in children,.
Why do we need Word Book Day?
Did you know what single indicator predicts a child’s academic success? Surprisingly it is not class, parental education and background or if they attend a grammar school. It is in fact whether they read for pleasure. So, this means that it is a fantastic opportunity to promote reading and make a real difference in children’s lives.
Are you aware of the DfE’s ‘The Reading Framework’?
The DfE’s ‘The Reading Framework’ is helpful to headteachers, English teachers, Reception and Primary school teachers and Teaching Assistants as well as tutors. It applies to KS1, KS2 but its main focus is Early Years Foundation Stage. If you are not familiar with it, you can read it by clicking here. It is particularly helpful for tutors and T.A.s who may be involved supporting children for catch-up learning. Something different for teachers and TA ‘s on World Book Day, and it’s a free download!
Are you a primary or secondary English teacher or T.A looking for something different for World Book Day? Oxfam have an interesting free download activity resource which is very relevant in today’s schools and teaching. It is themed ‘Looking beyond the single story’ and aims to challenge stereotypes, prejudices and cultural misunderstanding in everyday reading. Applicable to Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 (7–14 years); you can learn more and access the free download here.
